Welcome, Bienvenido, Fáilte, Benvenuto!
The Start Abroad programs provide students with a transformative opportunity to study in some of Europe’s oldest and most vibrant cities. This academic collaboration allows you to earn full-time college credit while studying abroad with the University of Miami in Barcelona, Dublin, or Rome during the Fall semester.
Before starting your UM career in January, spring starters are invited to apply for one of these programs to earn credits that will transfer directly towards your degree at UM. These programs offer a unique and exciting first-year international experience, reflecting the University of Miami’s goal to be a global university that transforms lives through education, research, innovation, and service. During the semester abroad, students will benefit from the unique cultural and social opportunities they encounter. Additionally, students will refine their interests and skills as they navigate their first semester abroad. Applicants must be 18 years old by the start of the program to be considered for the programs in Rome and Barcelona. Only the Start Abroad program in Dublin will accept applicants under the age of 18.

Roommate requests are accepted but not guaranteed for all programs. Students will be housed with other Start Abroad students or students from other U.S. programs (subject to change based on the program’s gender balance). Sharing a room is a new experience for many college students. The Start Abroad team encourages students to review the guidance on UM’s Housing and Residential Life website to prepare for this experience.
All students on a Start Abroad program will be registered in an international health insurance plan that meets the criteria for their respective country (and visa requirements, if applicable). Students do not need to purchase their own international health insurance. Students are strongly encouraged to retain their U.S. health insurance, even while overseas. This will cover you both before you leave and after you return from your program. Should you have an accident or illness overseas that requires long-term care, and you return to the U.S. for the duration of recovery or for ongoing treatment, maintaining your U.S. insurance policy ensures you will have coverage for these expenses.
Tuition & Fees: Out-of-pocket expenses may include:
Once admitted into a Start Abroad program, the Start Abroad team will provide additional information on how to pay tuition and program fees. Payment instructions for tuition, the program fee, and housing will be provided to each student. All UM billing and payment questions can be answered by UM’s Cane Central team. You can find additional information on how to contact them here. For information on monthly payment plans at UM, please see the details available on the Office of Student Accounts website.
Please note that no scholarships or financial assistance are available for the Start Abroad program. While these are considered UM programs, participants will be considered students at their respective study abroad institutions for the fall semester. As a deposited Spring 2026 student, your status as a degree-seeking student at the University of Miami will begin in January at the Spring 2026 Cane Kickoff orientation.
For travel and study abroad, you need a passport from your country of citizenship. It should be valid for your entire stay abroad and six months beyond your departure date. If your passport expires before June 30, 2026, or you don't have one, you should renew or apply as soon as possible.

U.S. passport holders do not require a visa to study in Ireland.
For students considering the Start Abroad in Rome program, note that all non-EU passport holders are required to obtain an Italian Student Visa and will have to surrender their passport to the Italian consulate as part of the visa application process. The consulate will hold your passport for a period of time while processing your visa, and the return date depends on their processing times. If you have travel plans over the summer, be sure to consider the timing of your visa application, as you will not have access to your passport during this period.
Students will be responsible for arranging their own travel and airfare to their respective Start Abroad city.
