The University of Miami's Division of Continuing and International Education (DCIE) is offering University of Miami Spring Start students the opportunity to take online non-degree courses in the fall semester.
This is an opportunity to kick start your degree progress and take online classes with UM faculty. Classes taken through DCIE will automatically be added to your official University of Miami transcript and may be used toward your degree completion when you start in the Spring.
Spring Start non-degree seeking students are limited to enroll in ten credit hours in the Fall 2024 semester. Online classes being offered during this semester include various levels of Math and Writing courses, and an Introductory Sociology course (MTH, WRS, SOC). Credits earned will automatically be added to your official University of Miami transcript and may be used toward your degree completion.
All non-degree courses are charged at the University per credit tuition rate. Financial aid will not be applied for any courses taken through this program.
No, non-degree seeking students are not eligible for on-campus housing, nor does the University of Miami recommend relocating to Miami as part of this online course experience.
Online non-degree seeking students are not issued a ’Cane Card and will not be able to access any buildings on campus. As an admitted Spring 2025 student, your status as a degree-seeking student at the University of Miami will begin in January at the Spring 2025 ’Cane Kickoff orientation.
As an online student, you will have access to UM faculty through your courses, online libraries, and UM academic advising. Online non-degree seeking students do not have access to any on-campus resources, facilities, athletic events, parking passes, or support services.
No, non-degree students participating in this course experience may not take classes at any other institution during the Fall 2024 semester. Credits earned at another institution while enrolled in this program will not be considered or accepted.
Space is limited and based on individual class capacity. Classes may close during the open registration period, just like the standard University course registration process.
No, online courses, including the courses in this program, do not count toward the minimum credit requirement to be eligible to join Greek life in the spring.
Transitional Advisors will be available in July to help you select the appropriate course(s). You will receive an email in late June with instructions for speaking to an advisor. If you were admitted to the University without test scores, you must take the ALEKS math assesment to determine your math placement. The ALEKS will be available for Spring Start students from May 15 - July 30.

Classes taken through DCIE will automatically be added to your official University of Miami transcript when you arrive in January, regardless of outcome. Grades and credits earned online will be applied toward your degree completion when you start in the Spring.
